Piano Lessons: The Original Homeschool

In many ways I think that Piano Lessons might be viewed as the original "Homeschool" While reading program biographies, it is not infrequent that you come across "She began her music studies with her father" or as in the case of the late American Pianist Van Cliburn; his home piano training began with his mother and made a legendary difference. (In 1958 at the age of 23 Van Cliburn won world wide recognition for winning the inaugural International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow (during the Cold War.) He returned to the United States a Super Star Legend, and was even given a Ticker Tape parade in NYC.

Musical Parents

Musical parents are often able to give their children that special edge on early music study. At the bank this week my customer service representative took special time to show me an iPhone video of her young son, whom she had trained in piano for at least a full year, it was amazing to see this five year old playing pieces effortlessly with two hands. Good Job Mom!

George Washington Home Schooled His Children

School age children have been taking piano lessons at home, or with their neighborhood piano teacher in the United States dating as far back as George Washington's step daughter Nelly Custis who studied piano at the Mt Vernon home in the 1790's with her teacher Alexander Reinagle, who was a close friend of Mozart.
